Hole in one

This cactus at the foot of the Superstition Mountains has a fairly large hole where birds or animals have been at it. This may prove to be the foundation for a shelter to be used in future by some desert critter.

A prickly subject

It's hard to resist photographing the Saguaro. Each individual cactus seems to have a personality. On a recent hike in the McDowell Mountains in Scottsdale, Arizona, it occurred to me that I could indulge my impulse to snap away if I created a blog for the photos -- even if only for my own enjoyment. So here we go with A Cactus a Day. You'll find many Saguaro, but also other interesting cacti. Some of the photos are about documentation, but I hope many also will be visually pleasing. I don't have quite enough to last a year, But, then again, if I run out I'll have an excuse to travel to the southwest and collect some more photos of cacti.
